EXFOLIATING SCRUBS AT A GLANCE

WHAT IT DOES: An exfoliating scrub lifts away dead skin cells and other cellular debris from the surface of the skin. Granules in the exfoliating scrub are massaged into cleansed skin to reveal a brighter complexion. Granules within an exfoliating scrub for the face should be smaller and have a smoother texture so as to not create micro-tears in the delicate skin of the face. Granules composed of minerals, such as silica or corundum crystals or other gentle ingredients such as rice flour are appropriate ingredients in an exfoliating scrub for the face. Body scrubs, on the other hand, may have larger granules, and are available in a range of ingredients. Popular body scrubs may use salt, sugar, coffee, pumice or even crushed grape seeds to provide physical exfoliation.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: To maximize the action of an exfoliating scrub, first cleanse the skin to remove surface impurities such as sweat, excess skin oils, and makeup. An exfoliating scrub may also be used as prep for an acid exfoliator such as lactic or glycolic acid to augment the effect of the acid exfoliator.
